Performance Max ad examples are public. PMax creative is served on Google surfaces like any other ad, so it appears in the Google Ads Transparency Center under the advertiser who paid for it. What you cannot get is a keyword view, because Performance Max never runs on a keyword list. That single fact is why SpyFu, Semrush, Adthena and every other tool that models competitors by scraping search results is structurally blind to PMax. Search by advertiser domain instead.
Performance Max has quietly become the campaign type most advertisers spend the most money on and understand the least about their competitors. Ask a media buyer what a rival is running on Search and they can usually tell you. Ask what that same rival is running on Performance Max and the answer is a shrug, because the tools they pay for return nothing.
The strange part is that the ads themselves were never hidden. They sit in a free Google product that most people looking for PMax examples never think to open, because they are searching for a keyword and the data is organized by advertiser.
Where can I see Performance Max ad examples?
In the Google Ads Transparency Center, searched by advertiser domain. Google lists the ads a verified advertiser is currently running across Search, Display, Shopping and YouTube, and Performance Max creative is included because it is served on those same surfaces. The report is free, needs no account, and shows how long each ad has been running.
The catch is the one that trips up almost everyone. The transparency data is indexed by advertiser, not by topic. Type a category term like plumbing or project management software and you get nothing back, because no advertiser is named plumbing. You have to know whose ads you want to look at before you can look at them. Once you do, you can read every live Google ad that advertiser is paying for, which is a more complete picture than any keyword tool will hand you. The same approach underpins how you find real Google Ads examples for any format, not just PMax.
Why competitor ad tools cannot show you Performance Max ads
This is worth understanding properly, because it explains a gap most buyers only discover after they have paid for a year of a tool.
Nobody reads a competitor Google Ads account. Every keyword list, cost per click figure and monthly spend estimate sold by SpyFu, Semrush, Adthena, Adbeat or Sensor Tower is produced the same way: scrape search results at enormous scale, note which advertisers appear for which queries, and reason backwards to a keyword set and a budget. It is a legitimate technique and it works reasonably well for classic Search campaigns.
It cannot work for Performance Max at all. A PMax campaign has no keyword list to reconstruct. Google decides which query, placement, product or video slot to serve the asset group into, based on the goal and the audience signal the advertiser supplied. There is no keyword layer to scrape, so a scraper sees a rival appear on a query and has nothing to attribute it to. The same blind spot applies to narrow geographic targeting and to brand campaigns, which those models routinely undercount.
So if your competitor moved most of their budget into Performance Max, and many have, your competitive intelligence tool did not report a decline in their advertising. It reported a decline in the part of their advertising it can see. Those are very different statements, and only one of them is true.
What is inside a Performance Max asset group
When you look at PMax examples you are seeing assembled combinations, not fixed ads. Google mixes text, image and video assets from the asset group and builds the ad that fits the surface it is serving. Knowing the ceiling on each asset type tells you how much creative sits behind what you are looking at. These limits are Google published specifications, checked in September 2026.
| Asset type | Maximum per asset group | Character or format limit |
|---|---|---|
| Headlines | 15 | 30 characters, at least one of 15 characters or fewer |
| Long headlines | 5 | 90 characters |
| Descriptions | 5 | 90 characters |
| Business name | 1 | 25 characters |
| Display URL paths | 2 | 15 characters each |
| Horizontal images (1.91:1) | 20 | JPG or PNG |
| Square images (1:1) | 20 | Required format for many placements |
| Vertical images (4:5) | 20 | JPG or PNG |
| Square logos (1:1) | 5 | Square ratio recommended |
| Horizontal logos (4:1) | 5 | Avoid white on transparent |
| Videos, all orientations | 15 | Minimum of 1 required |
Read that table next to a competitor PMax example and the scale of the operation becomes obvious. A fully populated asset group is 60 images, 15 videos, 15 headlines and 5 descriptions, and a serious advertiser runs several asset groups per campaign. Very few in-house teams can produce that volume of creative on their own schedule, which is why bringing in a freelance designer or video editor to fill the gaps has become a routine part of a Performance Max launch rather than a sign that something went wrong.
It also reframes what you are looking at when you study one example. You are seeing one permutation Google chose for one impression. The advertiser strategy lives in the full set, not in the single ad.
How to find real PMax ad examples for a specific advertiser
- Get the advertiser list first. The Auction Insights report inside the Google Ads account you already pay for names the advertisers competing in your auctions, and it covers Performance Max campaigns with the data segmented by Search and Shopping channels. It gives you domains and percentages, and no creative at all.
- Search by domain, not by brand word. The transparency data resolves a domain like example.com directly. A bare brand word often returns an empty result, because Google is matching a verified advertiser record rather than doing a text search.
- Read the whole advertiser record, not one format. PMax creative sits alongside that advertiser Search text ads, Shopping listings and YouTube videos. Comparing them is how you spot which message they trust enough to run everywhere.
- Sort by run length. Every creative carries the period Google has been running it. This is the only public performance signal that exists, and it separates proven work from tests.
- Save what you will reuse. Screenshots rot. Boards keep the ad, the advertiser and the date together, and CSV export of a saved board is available on the paid plans.
How do you tell which Performance Max creative is working?
You cannot see conversions, but run length is a strong proxy. Advertisers stop paying for assets that lose money, so a creative that has been live for many months has survived that decision repeatedly. An asset that appeared for a week and vanished was a test that failed. Compare run length across an advertiser record and the pattern separates their proven creative from their experiments.
There is a Performance Max specific wrinkle worth knowing. Because Google assembles ads from assets and rotates them automatically, a low performing individual image can persist longer inside a healthy asset group than a losing standalone ad would. So read run length at the asset group level where you can, and treat a single long running image as weaker evidence than a whole angle that keeps appearing across formats.
Does Performance Max appear in Auction Insights?
Yes. Google supports Auction Insights for Performance Max campaigns, with the data segmented by Search and Shopping channels, at both account and campaign level. What it will not give you is a keyword level view, for the same reason no scraper can build one. Auction Insights also contains no creative, no budget and no bid for anybody, so it answers who and never what.
That split is the whole workflow in one sentence. Auction Insights tells you which advertisers you compete with, and the transparency data tells you what those advertisers are saying. Neither one is optional if you want the full picture, and the two together are what a Google Ads competitor analysis tool should actually be built on.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see competitors Performance Max ads?
Yes, the creative side of them. Performance Max ads appear in the Google Ads Transparency Center under the advertiser running them, because they are served on Google surfaces. You will see the images, videos and text being used. You will not see the budget, the audience signals, the asset group structure or any keyword, because Performance Max has no keyword list.
Why does my competitor tool show no Performance Max data?
Because those tools infer competitor activity by scraping search results and mapping advertisers to keywords. Performance Max campaigns are not built on keywords, so there is nothing for that method to reconstruct. It is a structural limit of the technique rather than a bug in any particular product, and every tool built the same way shares it.
How many assets does a Performance Max asset group need?
Google requires at least 3 headlines, 2 descriptions, 1 video and a set of images, and allows up to 15 headlines, 5 long headlines, 5 descriptions, 20 images in each of three aspect ratios, 5 logos in each of two ratios and 15 videos. Ad Strength improves as you fill more of that space with genuinely different assets.
Are Performance Max ads the same as display ads?
No. Performance Max is a campaign type that serves across Search, Display, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Maps from one asset group. A display ad is a single placement type. Some PMax impressions are display placements, which is why PMax creative can look like display creative when you view it as an example.
Is there a Performance Max ad library?
Not as a separate product. The Google Ads Transparency Center is the library for every Google ad format including Performance Max, and there is no PMax specific view inside it. The practical consequence is that you browse by advertiser and read all their formats together rather than filtering to one campaign type.
How long does Google keep Performance Max ads visible?
Google publishes no general retention window for the Ads Transparency Center, and any figure quoted for it elsewhere is a guess. Two rules are documented: ads served in the European Economic Area are retained for one year after their last impression under the Digital Services Act, and political and issue ads are retained for seven years. Ordinary US commercial ads carry no published guarantee, so an ad can disappear once it stops running.
Can I export Performance Max ad examples?
The Ads Transparency Center itself has no bulk export, which is the usual reason teams move off it. In AdEye you can save any ad to a board and export a board to CSV on the paid plans. AdEye covers Google only, so Meta and TikTok creative is outside what it returns.
The short version
Performance Max did not make competitors invisible. It made them invisible to one method. The keyword scraping model that the competitive intelligence category is built on has no purchase on a campaign type with no keywords, while Google own transparency data lists the creative openly and stamps it with a date. If you have been assuming a rival went quiet on Google, check the advertiser record before you believe it. A walkthrough of the Ads Transparency Center covers the search behavior in more depth, and the same run length logic applies to every Google Ads example you pull, including the B2B ad examples where long sales cycles make an eight month run especially hard to fake.
