SpyFu has no free trial. What it offers instead is a free version with no time limit but truncated results, a 30-day money-back guarantee on every paid plan, and a discounted first month on Pro + AI at $59 before it moves to $119 a month. Basic is $39 a month and Team / Agency $249. Paying annually cuts those to $29, $89 and $187 a month. Checked on spyfu.com and SpyFu's help center in September 2026.
So the honest answer to "how do I try SpyFu for free" is that you pay, test, and ask for your money back if it disappoints. That is a better deal than most seven-day trials, as long as you go in with a plan and a calendar reminder. Below are the four ways to evaluate SpyFu before you are committed, what each one costs, how the refund works, and what SpyFu will not show you however long you test it.
What are the ways to try SpyFu before you commit?
| Option | What you pay up front | What you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free version | $0, an email address for unlimited searches | Any domain or keyword, as often as you like | Truncated results. No tracking, no full exports, no API |
| Basic, monthly | $39 | Full results up to 10,000 rows, one project, one user | No API, no RivalFlow AI sites |
| Pro + AI, first month | $59 | Unlimited results and exports, 10 projects, $40 API credit | Renews at $119 a month from month two |
| Annual plan | $348, $1,068 or $2,244 for the year | The same plans at $29, $89 or $187 a month | The whole year is charged at once |
Every paid row carries the same 30-day money-back guarantee. That is the real trial: the guarantee turns any of the three paid options into a refundable test.
Does SpyFu have a free trial?
No. SpyFu's own help center says it plainly: there is no free trial with a start and an end date. Instead there is a free version with no time limit, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid memberships. If you want to see the full data, you subscribe, and if it does not earn its keep inside 30 days you ask for a full refund.
That wording matters because a lot of pages ranking for this query still promise a "SpyFu free trial" link. Those links lead to the free search box, not to a time-limited copy of the paid product. Nothing is hidden behind them.
What can you do with the free version of SpyFu?
You can run any domain or keyword through SpyFu without paying. Share an email address and SpyFu says you can search as often as you want, for as long as you want. What you see is a preview: the top of each report, enough to tell whether a competitor has meaningful paid search history and roughly which keywords they buy.
It is a useful first filter. If your three main competitors come back thin in the free view, the paid plan will not suddenly find a rich ad history for them either, and you have saved yourself the subscription. If they come back busy, the free view shows you just enough to know what you are missing: the full keyword lists, the ad history timeline, project tracking and exports all sit behind a paid plan.
How does the SpyFu 30-day money-back guarantee work?
SpyFu's pricing page describes it as a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee: tell them at any point in the first 30 days and they refund you, with no forms and no reason required. Cancellation runs through email, live chat or phone, and SpyFu also lists the MyAccount page as a way to cancel. There are no contracts on the monthly plans.
Two practical points before you rely on it. First, the clock starts when you pay, not when you first log in, so do not subscribe on a Friday you are about to spend in meetings. Second, a refund is a request you make, not something that happens when you stop using the tool. Put a reminder on day 25, and if you already track recurring software charges for your team, log the subscription there the day you buy it so the renewal cannot slip past you.
Is the $59 first month the cheapest way to test SpyFu Pro?
For most teams, yes. Pro + AI costs $59 for the first month and $119 a month after that. Inside the guarantee window, that $59 buys you the full Pro + AI feature set: unlimited search results and exports, 10 tracked sites, 15,000 weekly rankings, 100 reports and the $40 monthly API credit. If it fails your test, the guarantee covers it.
The annual plan is the cheaper way to own SpyFu and the more expensive way to test it. Pro + AI annual is $89 a month, which SpyFu sells as three months free and a $360 saving, but it is billed as $1,068 in one charge. The guarantee still applies in the first 30 days, yet you are asking for a four-figure refund instead of a $59 one. Test monthly, then switch to annual once you know you are keeping it.
Basic at $39 is only cheaper on paper. It caps you at 10,000 rows of results, one project and no API, so a test on Basic can make SpyFu look weaker than the plan you would actually buy. If Pro + AI is where you would end up, test Pro + AI. The full plan-by-plan breakdown is in our SpyFu pricing guide.
How should you test SpyFu inside 30 days?
Go in with a list, not curiosity. On day one every competitive tool looks impressive, because every tool returns something. What you need to learn is whether the data holds up against things you already know.
- Check your own domain first. Compare SpyFu's estimate of your paid keywords and budget with your real Google Ads account. The size of that gap tells you how far to trust the numbers it shows for rivals.
- Pull three to five direct competitors. Use the ones you actually lose deals to, not the category leader. Look at ad history depth and whether the keywords match what you see in the search results.
- Test the export you will actually use. If the tool is going into a monthly report, build that report once during the trial.
- If you need the API, spend some of the $40 credit. Pro + AI includes it. Run the calls you plan to automate and check the row charges against our SpyFu API pricing breakdown before you build anything bigger.
- Decide by day 25. Leave yourself time to cancel through a person, not a last-minute form.
What will SpyFu not show you, however long you test it?
This is the part worth knowing before you pay, because no refund window changes it. SpyFu is a Google search tool built on modelled data. It scrapes search results and infers backwards, so keyword lists, cost-per-click figures and spend are estimates. Nobody outside Google reads a competitor's Google Ads account, SpyFu included.
Its ad history is also text ad history: headlines and descriptions from search ads over the years. It does not show the live creative a competitor is running today on Shopping, Display or YouTube, and Performance Max campaigns are largely invisible to any keyword-based tool because they do not run on a keyword list.
That gap is what AdEye covers. It reads Google's public Ads Transparency Center and returns the ads a competitor is running right now across Search, Shopping, Display and YouTube, tagged by hook and angle and ranked by how long each ad has run. The two work well together: SpyFu for keyword and budget estimates, AdEye for the actual creative. You can see it on your own competitors with the search above, and our Google Ads spy tool page explains what it covers and what it does not.
How does SpyFu's trial policy compare with other ad spy tools?
| Tool | Free trial | Refund or free option | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SpyFu | None | 30-day money-back guarantee, free version with truncated results | $39 a month, $29 billed annually |
| Semrush | None published | Free plan at $0, no credit card | $139 a month for the SEO toolkit |
| AdClarity | 7 days | Subscriptions non-refundable | $129 a month |
| Adthena | 21 days, no card, on its fixed-price products | Brand and market views sold by quote | $350 a month |
| PowerAdSpy | Paid, $1 or $7 for three days | Rolls into the full monthly price | $69 a month |
| AdEye | No time-limited trial | One-time demo: two searches with no account, ten in total on a free account | $39 a month, $19.50 billed yearly |
Read side by side, SpyFu's policy is one of the better ones in the category. A 30-day guarantee gives you a full billing cycle of real use, which a seven-day trial does not. The trade is that you pay first. Our ad spy tool free trial comparison goes through every vendor's policy in more detail.
Does SpyFu need a credit card to try?
Not for the free version. That needs nothing, or an email address if you want unlimited searches. Every paid plan, including the $59 first month on Pro + AI, is charged to a card when you subscribe, and the money-back guarantee is how you get it back.
Is there a SpyFu discount code?
The discounts SpyFu publishes itself are the $59 first month on Pro + AI and the annual billing rate, which it sells as three months free and a 25 percent saving. Coupon sites list codes for SpyFu, but none of them appear on SpyFu's own pricing page, so treat them as unverified until checkout confirms the price.
Is SpyFu worth paying for after the 30 days?
It is worth it if your job is Google keyword research and you want 10+ years of search ad history at a lower price than Semrush's advertising tools. It is the wrong buy if what you actually need is to see the ads competitors are running now, on YouTube, Display or Shopping, because SpyFu does not show that. Decide which of those two questions you are paying to answer, then use the 30 days to confirm it.
If the answer is the second one, start with AdEye's demo, then compare the plans on our pricing page. Paid plans start at $39 a month.
