Google Ads Transparency has no ads on record for that search. Google indexes ads by advertiser, so the brand's exact domain works best, for example nike.com.

Semrush vs Similarweb comes down to which question you pay to answer. Semrush is a search marketing suite: its SEO plans cost $139 to $549 a month ($117.33 to $455.67 billed annually), and competitor ad research is a separate Advertising toolkit at $99 or $220 a month. Similarweb is a traffic and market intelligence platform: $199, $399 or $649 a month ($125, $333 or $542 billed annually), with ad intelligence only on the $649 plan. If you want keywords, rankings and search ads, buy Semrush. If you want to know how much traffic a competitor gets and where it comes from, buy Similarweb.

Both tools sit on the same shortlists because both promise "competitor research", but they measure different things and price them differently. Semrush starts from search results: what a domain ranks for, what it bids on and what its ads say. Similarweb starts from traffic: how many visits a site gets, from which channels and countries, and how that compares with the rest of its market. This guide is for the marketer or agency owner who has to pick one, or decide whether the job needs both. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page and knowledge base.

Semrush vs Similarweb pricing

The sticker prices overlap, but the plans are cut along different lines. Semrush sells by toolkit, so SEO and advertising research are bought separately. Similarweb sells one ladder where each step adds a data set, and ad data sits on the top step.

PlanMonthlyBilled annuallyWhat it adds
Semrush SEO$139$117.33 a monthEntry SEO plan with the core SEO toolkit
Semrush Starter$199$165.17 a monthSEO plus AI search visibility for small teams
Semrush Pro+$299$248.17 a monthMore markets, locations and websites
Semrush Advanced$549$455.67 a monthThe only SEO plan with API access
Semrush Advertising Base$99$99 a monthAdvertising Research and PLA Research
Semrush Advertising Pro$220$220 a monthBase plus limited AdClarity display, social or video data
Similarweb Competitive Intelligence$199$125 a monthTraffic, engagement, demographics, channels; 3 months of history
Similarweb Competitive Intel and SEO and AEO$399$333 a monthAdds SEO toolkit and AI visibility; 6 months of history
Similarweb Competitive Intel, SEO and AEO and Ads$649$542 a monthAdds Ad Intelligence; 6 months of history

Two details change the math. Semrush charges the same for its Advertising toolkit whether you pay monthly or yearly, while its SEO plans save up to 17% on annual billing. Similarweb's annual discount is steeper, as much as 37% on the entry plan, and every self-service Similarweb plan includes one user seat. Semrush lists additional users on its SEO plans from $45 a month. Similarweb's Enterprise tier is quoted by sales and extends history to as much as 37 months. Our Similarweb pricing breakdown and Semrush pricing guide go plan by plan.

Is Semrush or Similarweb better?

Semrush is better for search marketing work: keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, backlinks and search ad research. Similarweb is better for market and traffic analysis: estimated visits, traffic sources, audience, referral partners and category benchmarks. Neither is better in general. A content or SEO team will use Semrush every day and Similarweb rarely; a strategy, partnerships or investor relations team is the other way around.

The overlap is real but shallow. Similarweb's $399 plan now includes an SEO toolkit with keyword research, a rank tracker, a site audit and backlinks, and Semrush sells its own traffic estimates in a separate Traffic and Market toolkit. Each covers the other's home ground as a second feature, not as the reason to buy it. If you find yourself picking a tool for its secondary module, you are usually about to overpay.

Semrush vs Similarweb for competitor ad research

This is where the two diverge most, and where many buyers pay for the wrong plan. On Semrush, competitor ad research is the Advertising toolkit. Base at $99 a month gives you Advertising Research (a domain's paid keywords, positions, ad copies and ads history) and PLA Research for Google Shopping. Pro at $220 adds AdClarity data, but with tight limits: one channel of display, social or video, three months of history, up to 50 reports, 100 ad search results and 5 exports.

On Similarweb, ad data appears only on the top self-service plan at $649 a month. Its Ad Intelligence covers creative and campaign insights, search and display insights, advertiser demand signals and ad spend data. The cheaper $199 and $399 plans show marketing channel mix (how much of a site's traffic comes from paid search or display), but not the ads themselves.

One caution applies to both. Neither company can see inside a competitor's Google Ads account. Keywords, bids, clicks and spend in every tool of this kind are modeled from crawled search results, panels and other signals, which is useful for direction and unreliable for exact budgets. The Semrush Advertising toolkit pricing guide covers exactly what the AdClarity limits mean in practice.

Which is more accurate, Semrush or Similarweb?

Neither is accurate in an absolute sense, because both estimate other people's traffic. Similarweb is generally treated as the stronger traffic estimator, since traffic modeling is its core product. Semrush is stronger on keyword and ranking data, which it measures directly by checking search results. The practical test is cheap: connect your own site's analytics, look up your own domain in both tools during the trial, and see which one comes closer to the numbers you know. Do the same for one competitor whose rough size you know.

Accuracy also falls off for small sites in both tools. A local business or a niche SaaS company with a few thousand visits a month will show wide error bars, or no estimate at all, in Similarweb, and thin keyword data in Semrush. If your competitors are small, spend more of the trial checking whether they appear at all.

What does Semrush vs Similarweb cost for a typical team?

Here are three common setups, billed annually, using each vendor's published prices.

  • An SEO lead who also checks rival search ads: Semrush SEO at $117.33 plus Advertising Base at $99, so about $216 a month. The closest Similarweb setup with ad data is $542 a month.
  • A strategy or growth analyst sizing competitors' traffic: Similarweb Competitive Intelligence at $125 a month covers it. Semrush estimates traffic too, but in a separate toolkit you would buy on top of its SEO plan.
  • A performance marketer who wants display and video creative plus spend estimates: Similarweb's Ads plan at $542 a month, or Semrush Advertising Pro at $220 if one channel and three months of history are enough.

Teams that need several logins should price seats before they compare plans. Each additional Semrush SEO user starts at $45 a month, and Similarweb's self-service plans include one seat, with team access sold through sales. For a three-person team, the seat line often decides it.

What neither tool shows you

Semrush and Similarweb both answer "how big is this competitor and where does its traffic come from". Neither is built to answer the question a media buyer asks every week: what ads is this competitor running right now, and which ones has it kept live long enough to be working? Semrush's ad copy history covers search text ads on the keywords it crawls. Similarweb's creative data sits behind the $649 plan. A rival's YouTube video ads and most of its Display banners are thin or missing in both at the lower tiers.

Google publishes that layer itself in its Ads Transparency Center, which lists every approved ad for a verified advertiser across Search, Shopping, Display and YouTube. AdEye searches that record by domain, returns a competitor's live Google ads in one feed, sorts them by how long each has run and saves them to boards, from $60 a month after a one-time demo of 10 searches. Try the search box on this page with a competitor's domain, or see how teams check competitors' Google ads step by step. Plenty of teams keep Semrush or Similarweb for the numbers and use AdEye for the creative, because $60 is less than the gap between Similarweb's $399 and $649 plans.

Which one should you buy?

An SEO or content team

Semrush. Keyword research, rank tracking, site audits and backlinks are the core product, and the SEO plan at $139 a month is the entry point. Add the Advertising toolkit only if someone on the team actually works on paid search. If nobody in-house has the hours to run an SEO tool properly, an SEO agency for SaaS and ecommerce brands can be the better spend than a subscription that sits unused.

A strategy, partnerships or investor team

Similarweb. Market share, traffic trends, audience overlap and referral sources are what it does best, and the $199 plan ($125 billed annually) covers most of that. Look at Enterprise only if you need more than six months of history or more than one seat.

A PPC manager or performance agency

Semrush Advertising Base at $99 for search keywords and ad copy, plus a creative source for Display and YouTube. Similarweb's Ads plan makes sense when you also need traffic and spend estimates for client pitches and can justify $542 a month or more. Our PPC spy tool comparison lays out the rest of the market.

Frequently asked questions

Is Similarweb more expensive than Semrush?

At the entry level, no. Similarweb's Competitive Intelligence plan costs $125 a month billed annually against $117.33 for Semrush SEO, and $199 against $139 billed monthly. For ad data it is much more expensive: Similarweb puts Ad Intelligence on its $649 plan ($542 billed annually), while Semrush sells competitor ad research from $99 a month.

Can Semrush replace Similarweb?

For SEO and search ad research, yes. For traffic and market analysis, only partly. Semrush's Traffic and Market toolkit estimates visits and sources, but Similarweb's traffic modeling, audience data, category benchmarks and app data are deeper, and that is what Similarweb customers pay for. If traffic analysis is a monthly task rather than a daily one, Semrush's estimate may be enough.

Does Similarweb have SEO tools?

Yes, from the $399 plan. Competitive Intel and SEO and AEO adds organic search overview, keyword research, a rank tracker, a site audit and backlinks, plus AI brand visibility tracking for 150 prompts. It is a credible SEO toolkit, but Semrush's is older and broader, and SEO specialists usually prefer it.

Does Semrush or Similarweb have a free trial?

Both offer one. Semrush shows "Try for free" on its SEO plans and lists a 7-day free trial on both Advertising toolkit plans. Similarweb offers a free trial on its self-service plans but does not publish the length. Use the trial to look up your own site first, because that is the only way to check how accurate each tool is for your market.

Do Semrush and Similarweb have an API?

Yes, but neither is cheap. Semrush's API comes with the $549 Advanced plan and is metered in units bought separately. Similarweb's API is sold through custom packages and priced in data credits, with no published rate. Our guides to Semrush API pricing and Similarweb API pricing explain how each is billed.

What is a cheaper alternative for seeing competitors' ads?

If you only need the ads themselves, start with Google's free Ads Transparency Center, or AdEye, which searches the same record by domain and sorts every Google ad by run length, from $60 a month. You give up Semrush's keyword estimates and Similarweb's traffic data, but you see the real Search, Display and YouTube ads a competitor has approved and running.
