Google Ads Transparency has no ads on record for that search. Google indexes ads by advertiser, so the brand's exact domain works best, for example nike.com.

SpyFu vs Ahrefs comes down to what you are buying the tool for. SpyFu is the cheaper, PPC-first option: $39, $119 or $249 a month ($29, $89 or $187 billed annually), Google only, with long competitor ad history and extra seats at $30. Ahrefs is an SEO platform first: $129, $249 or $449 a month for Lite, Standard and Advanced, with paid search reports added on and history that depends on the plan (6 months on Lite, 2 years on Standard). For competitor PPC research on a budget, SpyFu wins. If organic search is the main job and paid search is a side question, Ahrefs wins. Neither shows a rival's Display or YouTube creative.

Most SpyFu vs Ahrefs comparisons are written by SEO people for SEO people, and they end with "Ahrefs has more backlinks", which is true and beside the point if your job is Google Ads. This one is written for the person running paid search, or the agency owner paying for the seats, who has to decide where the next few hundred dollars a month goes. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page and help center.

SpyFu vs Ahrefs pricing

The entry prices look close only if you compare the wrong rows. SpyFu's top plan costs less than Ahrefs' second plan, and SpyFu's Team / Agency tier includes five users, while every Ahrefs plan includes one user and charges for the rest.

Ahrefs also sells a $29 Starter plan with tight usage limits, and a free tier for site owners. SpyFu has a free version with truncated results. Neither company offers a classic free trial: SpyFu instead gives a 30-day money-back guarantee, and Ahrefs' pricing page lists no trial at all. The full SpyFu plan caps are in our SpyFu pricing breakdown.

Is SpyFu or Ahrefs better for PPC?

SpyFu is better for PPC. It was built around one question, what has this advertiser done on Google over time, and the paid search side of the product is the center of it rather than a tab. You get a domain's estimated paid keywords, the ad copy it has run against them, how long each variation stayed live, and the keywords it tested and dropped. Ahrefs covers the same ground in a lighter way, inside a platform whose depth is in organic rankings, backlinks and content.

The bigger practical difference is history. SpyFu advertises more than 10 years of Google data, which lets you see what a competitor ran last holiday season and the one before. Ahrefs limits history by plan: 6 months on Lite, 2 years on Standard, 5 years on Advanced, and unlimited only on Enterprise. For a PPC manager, six months of history means you cannot look back at last year's peak season on the plan most small teams buy.

What PPC data does Ahrefs have?

Ahrefs' help center lists four places to do paid search analysis. Site Explorer has an Overview with estimated paid traffic and its cost over time, a Paid keywords report with ad positions (top, bottom and Shopping) and the landing page for each keyword, and a Paid pages report that ranks a site's pages by estimated paid traffic cost. Keywords Explorer adds Ads history, which shows who has bid on a keyword over time and where they sent the click, and the SERP overview shows the ads on a results page with their text.

All of it is Google search ads. It is useful for a quick look at whether a rival buys a term and roughly how much traffic that brings, and it sits next to the organic data for the same domain, which is the real reason to buy Ahrefs. The figures are estimates built from crawled search results, as they are in every tool of this kind, not numbers from the advertiser's account.

What PPC data does SpyFu have?

SpyFu's paid side covers a competitor's PPC keywords with estimated clicks and cost, its ad history with every recorded variation of the text ad, the keywords it bought and later stopped buying, and a list of the domains that compete with it in paid search. Pro + AI and Team / Agency also include API access, billed by rows returned, with a $40 or $100 monthly credit. Our SpyFu API pricing guide has the rate card.

What does SpyFu vs Ahrefs cost for a team of three?

Seat pricing changes the answer more than the sticker price does. Take a PPC team of three people who all need a login, billed monthly.

  • SpyFu Pro + AI with two extra seats: $119 plus $60, so $179 a month.
  • SpyFu Team / Agency: $249 a month with five seats included, which is the cheaper route once a fourth person joins.
  • Ahrefs Lite with two extra seats: $129 plus $80, so $209 a month, with 6 months of history. Lite stops at three users.
  • Ahrefs Standard with two extra seats: $249 plus $120, so $369 a month, for 2 years of history.

For a three-person paid search team, SpyFu costs $30 to $190 a month less, depending on the plans you compare. If the same team also owns SEO for the company, Ahrefs' extra cost buys a much deeper organic toolset, and that is usually what decides it.

Ahrefs vs SpyFu vs Semrush

Semrush is the third name on most shortlists. Its Advertising toolkit costs $99 (Base) or $220 (Pro) a month, and Pro includes AdClarity data on display and video ads with tight limits. That puts Semrush between the other two: broader than SpyFu, more PPC-specific than Ahrefs, and the most expensive once you stack toolkits. Our SpyFu vs Semrush comparison and Semrush Advertising toolkit pricing guide go into the numbers.

A quick way to place all three: SpyFu is the PPC specialist on a budget, Ahrefs is the SEO platform with a paid search view, and Semrush is the suite you buy when one tool has to cover SEO, ads and content for a whole marketing team.

What neither tool shows you

SpyFu and Ahrefs both start from search results pages. That means they record the text ads that appear for the keywords they crawl, and nothing a competitor runs outside those pages. A rival's Display banners, its YouTube pre-roll, its responsive image ads and most of what Performance Max serves never show up in either tool, and both report estimated keywords rather than the ads the advertiser actually has live.

Google publishes that half in its Ads Transparency Center: every approved ad for a verified advertiser, across Search, Shopping, Display and YouTube. AdEye makes that record searchable by domain, sorts each competitor's ads by how long they have run, and saves them to boards, from $60 a month after a one-time demo of 10 searches. Use the search box on this page to look up a competitor, or read how to see a competitor's Google ads step by step. Many PPC teams pair a keyword tool with it, because one tells you what a rival bids on and the other shows you what they are actually saying.

Which one should you buy?

A solo PPC manager or freelancer

SpyFu Basic at $39, or Pro + AI if you need unlimited exports. You get the keyword and ad history you will use every week for a third of the price of Ahrefs Lite. If the SEO half of your work is about fixing and rewriting pages rather than backlink research, a dedicated SEO audit and rewrite tool may cover it for less than an Ahrefs seat.

An in-house marketer who owns SEO and paid search

Ahrefs Lite or Standard. The organic data is the stronger product and the paid search reports answer the occasional "are they bidding on our name?" question. Standard is the plan to choose if you need to look back past six months.

A PPC agency

SpyFu Team / Agency at $249 with five seats is hard to beat for paid search work across clients. Add a creative source for Display and YouTube, since clients increasingly ask what rivals run there. Our PPC spy tool comparison covers the wider market, including what replaced iSpionage.

Frequently asked questions

Is SpyFu better than Ahrefs?

For PPC competitor research, yes. SpyFu is cheaper, built around paid search, and keeps more than 10 years of Google ad history on its paid plans, while Ahrefs Lite keeps 6 months. For SEO, Ahrefs is better, with a deeper backlink index and stronger content and rank tracking tools. Pick the one that matches the job you do most weeks.

Is SpyFu cheaper than Ahrefs?

Yes. SpyFu starts at $39 a month ($29 billed annually) and its top Team / Agency plan is $249 with five users. Ahrefs starts at $129 for Lite, $249 for Standard and $449 for Advanced, each with one user and paid extra seats. A three-person team pays $179 a month on SpyFu Pro + AI against $209 on Ahrefs Lite.

Does Ahrefs show competitor ads?

It shows competitor search ads. Site Explorer's Paid keywords and Paid pages reports, Keywords Explorer's Ads history and the SERP overview show which keywords a site bids on, the ad text and the landing pages. Ahrefs does not show Display, YouTube or image ads. For those, search the advertiser in Google's Ads Transparency Center or in AdEye.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No trial is listed on Ahrefs' pricing page. Ahrefs offers a free tier for verified site owners and a $29 Starter plan with limited usage, which is the cheapest way to try the interface. SpyFu also has no trial, but it offers a free version with truncated results and a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans.

Can I use SpyFu and Ahrefs together?

Yes, and agencies that sell both SEO and PPC often do: Ahrefs for organic research and links, SpyFu for paid keyword and ad history. Together they cost from $168 a month (SpyFu Basic plus Ahrefs Lite). Before paying for both, check whether one person really needs both every week, because overlapping keyword data is where the second subscription stops earning its keep.

What is the best SpyFu alternative for Google Ads creative?

A tool that reads Google's Ads Transparency Center rather than search results. SpyFu, Ahrefs and Semrush all model keywords from crawled results pages, so they miss Display and YouTube creative. AdEye searches the Transparency Center by domain and returns a rival's live Search, Shopping, Display and YouTube ads sorted by run length, from $60 a month.
