SpyFu is the cheaper, narrower tool: Google only, $39 a month to start ($29 billed annually) and $119 for Pro + AI, with 10+ years of modeled keyword and ad copy history on every plan. Semrush is a full marketing suite that restructured its lineup in 2026 into SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced tiers at $139, $199, $299 and $549 a month, and a free plan at $0 with no credit card. If you only do paid search, SpyFu wins on price. If paid search is one line item among ten, Semrush wins on scope. Neither one shows you a competitor's live ad creative.

Both of these get shortlisted for the same job and they are not really the same product. SpyFu was built around one idea: archive what advertisers do on Google and let you rewind it. Semrush grew into a suite where paid search is one toolkit sitting beside site audits, backlinks, content and now AI search visibility. The comparison only gets useful once you decide which of those shapes you are actually buying.

How much do SpyFu and Semrush cost?

SpyFu lists Basic at $39, Pro + AI at $119 (with a $59 first month) and Team / Agency at $249 a month, or $29, $89 and $187 a month billed annually, which saves $120, $360 and $744 a year. Extra users are $30 each. The full plan caps, API rates and refund terms are in our SpyFu pricing breakdown. Semrush prices are higher and its plan names changed in 2026.

SpyFu prices re-checked September 2026, Semrush prices re-checked September 2026. The four Semrush rows above are its SEO and AI Search line; the two Advertising rows are a separately priced product line, and the annual figures are what Semrush displays by default. That split matters for this comparison, because competitor ad creative sits in the Advertising line rather than in the SEO plans people usually quote. Our full breakdown of Semrush pricing walks through both lines. Semrush also keeps a free tier with no card required, and its cheaper paid tiers carry a try-for-free entry point, though Semrush states no trial length on the pricing page. SpyFu does not run a conventional free trial: you get a limited number of free searches and a money-back guarantee instead, which is a meaningful difference if your buying process needs a proper pilot.

One thing to confirm before you sign anything with Semrush. The 2026 lineup is organized around SEO and AI search visibility, so the advertising research tools are not equally prominent in every tier, and some competitive advertising data sits in paid add-ons rather than the base plan. Ask a sales rep to confirm in writing that the specific PPC reports you want are included in the tier you are quoted.

What is the difference between SpyFu and Semrush?

The short version: SpyFu goes deep on Google history for a low price, Semrush goes wide across channels for several times that price. Here is where each one actually lands.

Is SpyFu or Semrush better for PPC?

For pure paid search research on a budget, SpyFu is better value and it is not close on price. It was designed for the question a PPC manager asks, which is what has this advertiser been doing on Google and for how long, and its long archive means you can look at a competitor's activity across several years rather than this quarter. Semrush is better when the PPC work has to sit inside a wider picture, because the same account also tells you what those competitors rank for organically, what content they publish and where their links come from.

If you manage paid search for clients and you also owe them an organic story, paying once for Semrush usually beats stitching three tools together. If paid search is the entire engagement, SpyFu plus a live creative tool costs a fraction of a Semrush Advertising Pro seat.

How accurate is SpyFu keyword data?

Directionally useful, not authoritative, and the same caveat applies to Semrush. Neither vendor reads anyone's Google Ads account, because no such access exists. Both build their keyword lists, cost per click figures and spend estimates by scraping search results at scale and inferring backwards from which ads appeared where. That works reasonably well on high-volume commercial terms in major markets and gets thin fast everywhere else.

The predictable blind spots are worth knowing before you put a number in a client deck. Brand campaigns are usually under-counted, narrow geographic targeting rarely surfaces, and Performance Max is structurally invisible to this method because it never ran on a keyword list in the first place. Treat every competitor spend figure from either tool as a hypothesis you would be embarrassed to defend as fact.

Does SpyFu or Semrush show competitor ad creative?

Only in part, and this is the gap most buyers discover after they have paid. Both tools surface text ad examples pulled from search results. Neither one gives you the advertiser's current live creative across every Google surface, so Shopping listings, display banners and YouTube video ads mostly fall outside what you get.

That matters because Google itself publishes the thing they are approximating. The Ads Transparency Center holds one record per verified advertiser covering Search, Shopping, Display and YouTube together, with how long each creative has been running. It is free, it is authoritative because it is the advertiser's own approved copy, and it answers the creative question that modeled data can only gesture at. What it does not do is make that record easy to search across many advertisers or keep what you found. That is the job of a PPC competitor analysis tool built on top of it, and it is why plenty of teams run one of these keyword suites alongside a Google Ads spy tool rather than instead of one.

The YouTube half is the piece people forget entirely. A competitor's pre-roll sits in the same advertiser record as their search ads, so you can watch the video they are spending real money on. If reviewing that leaves you wanting your own version, turning a script or a product page straight into a finished video ad is a much shorter path than briefing an editor.

Which is better for an agency?

Semrush, in most cases, and the reason is reporting rather than data. Agencies need projects, scheduled reports, white labeling and multiple seats, and Semrush is built around that workflow at the Pro+ and Advanced tiers. SpyFu supports teams and charges $30 per extra user, which is cheap, but the deliverable you hand a client tends to need the wider context Semrush produces.

The exception is a specialist paid search shop. If every client engagement is Google Ads and nothing else, an Advanced seat is mostly capability you never open. SpyFu Pro + AI at $119 plus a creative tool covers the actual work for less than half the price.

Can you use SpyFu and Semrush together?

Yes, and the overlap is smaller than the price tags suggest. A common setup is Semrush for organic research, site health and client reporting, SpyFu for cheap long-range Google ad history, and a transparency-center tool for live creative. What you should not do is buy two of these for the same job, because both model keyword data the same way and largely agree with each other. Paying twice for the same inference is the most common waste in this category.

Is there a free version of SpyFu or Semrush?

Semrush keeps a genuine free tier with no credit card, limited to a small number of daily requests. Semrush advertises no conventional free trial on its pricing pages, only Try for free buttons that lead to that free plan. SpyFu gives you a handful of free searches and leans on a money-back guarantee rather than a trial. Beyond both, the two genuinely free sources are Auction Insights inside your own Google Ads account, which authoritatively names the advertisers you compete with, and the Ads Transparency Center, which shows you their live ads. Run those first. They cost nothing and they answer more than most people expect.

If SpyFu is the one you are leaning toward, the tier breakdown in our SpyFu pricing guide covers what each plan unlocks, and the SpyFu alternative comparison sets it against a live creative tool feature by feature. Whichever suite you land on, pair it with the free authoritative sources first. Modeled keyword data is a starting hypothesis. The ad a competitor is running today is a fact, and it is published.
